Anthony Tendido, “At” Maculangan, photographer and UST fine arts alumnus, died on Oct. 14. He was 60.

Maculangan’s death was announced two days later by his friend and fellow photographer, Wig Tysmans, on Facebook.

He studied painting under the now-defunct College of Architecture and Fine Arts, and developed an interest in working with found objects and mixed media, which later led him to explore film.

Myra Rauro, a decorated Thomasian artist and songwriter, said in a Facebook post: “We met when the world was young, during my fourth year of AB Communication Arts at UST … I was a wannabe Paulina Porizkova … and he was a budding photographer.”.

“Last year, his name lit up my screen– a call through Messenger. We walked (down) memory lane together and shared how life had changed,” Rauro said.

“It was a brief, gentle reminder of a connection that time hadn’t completely frayed. I never imagined it would be our final (conversation).”

Maculangan moved to Italy at 20 and returned to the Philippines after 15 years, where he decided to pursue photography as a career.

From there, he participated in several local and international exhibitions and established Lomomanila, a group for amateur and professional photographers interested in lomography.

The artist co-founded Pioneer Studios, a photo studio, workshop space, and photography and print gallery, based in Mandaluyong. He also helped form artbooks.ph, a bookstore specializing in local printed matter.

He was also highly involved in Philippine cinema, starring in five films and directing two short films.

A memorial service and gathering for Maculangan will be held on Oct. 23, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Ateneo Art Gallery in Quezon City.
