A GROUP of UST medicine graduates launched the charity exhibit, “Gilas, Puso, Buhay: Handog at Pasasalamat” at the UST Museum on Feb. 5 to raise funds for indigent patients and in-house medical missions.
Ten members of the Magilas Art Group, composed of members of the UST Medicine Class of 1981, and six guest artists participated in the exhibit, whose proceeds will partly go to the UST Hospital Clinical Division’s indigent fund.
Magilas began when Dr. Minda de la Serna-Cabrera proposed the creation of an outlet for alumni-doctors to express themselves through art. It became a reality after she launched her exhibit, “The Ati of Panay,” in 2017.

Among the pieces on exhibit at “Gilas, Puso Buhay” is Dr. Mari Josephine Han-Valera’s collection of UNESCO World Heritage Site photographs.
Dr. Angela Manansala displayed her 11×14-in. watercolor paintings “Canyonscapes 1,” “Canyonscapes 2,” and “Canyonscapes 3,” reflecting the colors of the desert, a prominent feature of her home in Arizona.

Dr. Normando Sta. Ana Jr. exhibited portraits of his classmates: “Wangis ng Kamag-aral 1,” a 15×20-in. acrylic piece, and “Wangis ng Kamag-aral 2,” a 15×20-in. pencil illustration.
Tracing his Thomasian roots, Dr. Jose Mejino put on display a collection of acrylic paintings of the historic UST Main Building.
“It’s my small and simple way of saying thank you to UST,” Mejino told the Varsitarian. “It’s my show of loyalty to my alma mater.”

Other physician artists in “Gilas, Puso, Buhay” are Dr. Ernesto Banalagay, Dr. Perla Deveza-Inacay, Dr. Wilma Dumlao-Olson, Dr. Imelda Lacayanga-Tsuijo, and Dr. Mary Banalagay.
The guest artists are Augusto Agoncillo, Merlie Alunan, Wilfredo Calderon, Orestes Monzon, Ernesto Tee, and Jacinto Tee.
The “Gilas, Puso, Buhay” exhibit will be open until Feb. 28.
