TO PREVENT flooding, the drainage system along Albert Drive, located between the Tan Yan Kee (TYK) Student Center and the Miguel de Benavides Library, is undergoing maintenance work.

In an interview with the Varsitarian, John Lester Rosal, in-house mechanical engineer of the Facilities Management Office (FMO), said the maintenance work will ensure the drainage system discharges accumulated rainwater to the designated outfall.

The drainage line along the stretch of Albert Drive, which is prone to gutter-level flooding during heavy rains, ends in an outfall near Gate 11 at Dapitan Street. It is connected to flood control systems in the vicinity.

Kailangan mapunta doon ‘yong rainwater, mapunta doon sa outfall, which is connected din doon sa flood control na pa-discharge sa Dapitan public drainage,” Rosal explained.

Aside from improving drainage systems, routine services done by the FMO include monitoring the water pumps that prevent the accumulation of rainwater, clearing leaves to prevent blockages, and ensuring that manholes are covered.

Work on the drainage system began on Aug. 16 and is estimated to be completed in the second week of September, according to Rosal.

Portions of the parking area along Albert Drive are temporarily inaccessible and motorists are advised to use the space at the back of TYK Student Center.

Construction work will start at 7 p.m. onward to avoid disrupting classes.
