Oct. 24 2016, 11:07 a.m. – AN ECO-THEOLOGIAN has criticized the “Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church” for having little to say on the issue of climate change.
Fr. Sean McDonagh, a Columban “environmental missionary,” said the lack of content on climate change in the Compendium, a detailed document on Catholic Social Teaching, was “complete utter nonsense.”
“This is in 2004, this is not from a hundred years ago,” the Irish priest said in a conference at the Espiritu Santo Parochial School last Oct. 22.
McDonagh emphasized the need for the care and preservation of the environment, calling it a “responsibility and moral issue.”
“What we do in [our] environment is a moral question and implication on our personal love,” said McDonagh.
He urged the faithful to refrain from destroying biodiversity, and act as God’s “shepherds” even to non-human creation.
“Mistaken understanding of our own principles has at times led us to justify mistreating the nature,” McDonagh said.
The four-hour conference, titled “Laudato Si, on the care of Our Common Home and Its Prophetic Message,” was organized by the Manila Archdiocesan Ministry on Ecology, Our Lady of Remedies Parish and the Global Catholic Climate Movement.

Can’t figure out this theologian. The Pope had just written “Laudato Si” when he gave this lecture and he complains about the lack of Church teaching on climate change? Does he expect the compendium to be focused only on this problem? It’s a big issue, sure, but it’s hardly the only social issue that the Church is concerned with.
