DANILO VIBAS, a veteran entertainment columnist and a former reporter for the Varsitarian, passed away on April 29. He was 71.
He died due to pancreatic cancer, his nephew Vincent Vibas confirmed to the Varsitarian.
Vibas earned his journalism degree, cum laude, from UST in 1975.
During his stay at the University, he served as a reporter for the Varsitarian from 1974 to 1975.
Vincent remembered Danilo as a “pillar” of the family who used his success to uplift his kin.
“His quiet selflessness was the bridge to our futures, as his financial support paved the way for many of our cousins to graduate and pursue their dreams,” Vincent said.
“His legacy lives on in the degrees we hold and the values he instilled, a testament to a man who invested his life’s work into the success and growth of the next generation,” he added.
Vibas was known among his peers for his “pointed” questioning during press conferences and his support for Thomasian visual artists.
He spent decades covering the entertainment industry, serving as an assistant entertainment editor at The Manila Times and a columnist at the Daily Tribune in 2022.
Vibas also served as a public relations officer of The Entertainment Arts & Media, an organization of entertainment editors, columnists, photographers, publicists, and talent managers.
Vibas was also an educator who taught English at Far Eastern University.
His wake was held at La Funeraria Paz on G. Araneta Avenue in Quezon City until May 5.
A funeral Mass and interment took place on May 6 at the Sarmiento San Jose Del Monte Bulacan Cemetery.
