FORMER journalism coordinator Nestor Cuartero has been appointed board member of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).
Cuartero will join Maria Rosario Fabregas and Ma. Cecilia Villarosa as new members of the 30-person board.
Their appointments will be effective immediately, based on the issuance from Malacañang on Dec. 2. Their terms will expire on Sept. 30, 2026.
They will succeed Jerry Talavera, Cherry Espion, at Jan Cadungog.
A veteran journalist, Cuartero spent 36 years at Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp., where he served as editor until his retirement in 2018.
He continues to be a columnist for Tempo and Manila Bulletin, with his column “Passerby” featuring notable personalities in the Philippine entertainment industry.
Cuartero made a mark in UST as editor of the Varsitarian’s Circle or the arts and culture section in the 1970s.
He obtained his undergraduate degree in journalism in UST, where he became an educator for over two decades under the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Letters.
Cuartero also served as adviser of The Flame, the Artlets student publication.
He has received several accolades, including three consecutive Graphic Salute awards at the Nick Joaquin Literary Awards of the Philippines Graphic magazine since 2023.
He bagged the Grand Prize in Primer Premio de Periodismo of the Instituto Cervantes in 2000 and was named Environment Journalist of the Year by the Philippine Agricultural Journalists group in 2010.
He is the author of three books, “At Large, At Leisure” (2008), “PH Movie Confidential” (2022), and “Easy Listening” (2023).
Founded in 1985, the MTRCB, a body under the Office of the President, rates films, TV shows and home videos.
