Ana Maria Atabug-Ocampo, former assistant director of the UST Institute of Religion, died on Feb. 22. She was 84.

The University announced her death on its Facebook page on Feb. 25.

“We are grateful for her years of service and extend our deepest condolences to her bereaved family members and loved ones,” UST said in its post.

Prof. Allan Basas, the institute’s incumbent assistant director, said Ocampo was best known for her “maternal care” for both faculty and students.

“She navigated the challenges of religious education with grace, helping to ensure that education in the University remained rooted in its Catholic identity,” Basas told the Varsitarian.

“To her students, she was more than a professor; she was a witness to the Gospel. Her lectures were not merely academic exercises but invitations to live a life of purpose and compassion,” he added.

Ocampo began her service at the University in 1966 as an educator. She served as assistant director of the institute from 2003 to 2006.

She was a member of the Dean’s Council from 1994 to 2000 and from 2008 to 2010.

Ocampo retired in 2010 after serving the University for over four decades.
