The Instituto Cervantes de Manila is set to hold a literary translation forum titled “Traducciones de ida y vuelta” (Round Trip Translations) on July 30 in Intramuros.
The forum seeks to discuss the state of literary translation and how it strengthens cultural relations between the Philippines and Spanish-speaking countries.
Among the panelists is translator and Faculty of Medicine and Surgery alumna Dr. Alice Sun-Cua, who translated the Spanish work “The Art of the Visayan-Hiligaino Language As Spoken in Panay and Some Adjacent Islands,” written by Fr. Mariano Cuartero, O.P.
She also translated “Nada,” a 1945 coming-of-age novel written by Spanish author Carmen Laforet, and wrote a collection of travel essays titled “Autumn in Madrid.”
University of the Philippines Diliman professor Marlon James Sales and journalist Marga Ortigas will join Cua in the discussion of how Filipino authors with firsthand experiences in translating local literary works helped introduce Philippine literature to Hispanic readers.
Sales’ translated works include Gonzalo Torrente Ballester’s “Ang Kuwento ng Haring Tulala” and Gabriel Miró’s “The Leprous Bishop and Our Father San Daniel.”
Ortigas, a former senior correspondent for Al Jazeera English, is the author of the Philippine novel “The House on Calle Sombra,” which was translated into Spanish as “La Casa en Calle Sombra.”
