MANILA Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso told food stall vendors at “Fusion Alley” to maintain order and cleanliness at “Fusion Alley” during a dialogue at Manila City Hall on Thursday, July 30.
The meeting came a day after Domagoso’s response to noise and sanitation concerns at the popular food strip raised by a Varsitarian news reporter during a media forum on July 29.
Domagoso, who seemed irritated at the questions posed by the campus journalist, defended the food hub’s continued operation, but said the city could “do better” at addressing noise and sanitation on I. Delos Reyes Street, the site of the nightly food bazaar.

During the dialogue, Domagoso asked the vendors to properly dispose of cooking waste and garbage after operating hours.
The mayor said that while he was happy that people were able to make a living by selling at Fusion Alley, vendors must maintain order and cleanliness.
“Perhaps you are too noisy? There’s no [live] band there, right? Contain yourself,” Domagoso said in Filipino.
“Just take good care of [the street]. Maintain it, clean up after yourselves,” he added.
Domagoso said the visibility of police officers must be ensured, and that garbage should be removed from the street before sunrise.
The mayor also told Fusion Alley vendors that the Manila Health Department (MHD) would conduct random inspections at their stalls.
“We are doing random checks, [for the] safety of the consumer … just like what we normally do at Isetann [mall] on Recto Avenue,” Domagoso said in Filipino.
In a Facebook post on Thursday night, Domagoso called for discipline among vendors.
“Malinaw ang aking bilin: kapag nakita kong marumi ang paligid ay kaagad ko silang ipapasara,” Domagoso wrote.
(My request is clear: if I see that the surroundings are dirty, I will close down [the stalls] immediately.)
In a subsequent Facebook post, Domagoso shared two videos showing workers sweeping and scrubbing the food strip and collecting garbage in the early hours of Friday, July 31.
“Rest assured, pinakikinggan ko po ang reklamo ng bawat Batang Maynila, kahit isa o iilan pa lamang ang nagsasalita. At sisiguraduhin nating mananatiling malinis at maayos ang Fusion Alley,” Domagoso wrote.
(Rest assured, I listen to the concerns of the youth of Manila, even if only one or a few are speaking. And we will make sure that Fusion Alley remains clean and orderly.)
The Varsitarian earlier reported complaints from dormitory occupants, residents, and commuters about safety, sanitation, and street congestion caused by the popular food strip.
