A LAWMAKER from Kabataan party-list group is set to file a House resolution on Tuesday, June 3, calling for an investigation into the death of Junver Toledo, a 22-year-old BS Physical Therapy senior who took his life on May 17.

Ahead of the filing, Kabataan Rep. Raoul Manuel plans to deliver a privilege speech about Toledo’s passing during a plenary session on June 2 at the House of Representatives.

Rise for Education – España, a network of UST student groups, called on central and local student councils, political parties and student organizations, and other organizations to join  the House resolution filing.

“KPL (Kabataan Party-list) places utmost priority on the June 3 filing, where the unified presence of our leaders and formations will symbolize our unwavering demand for accountability and systemic change,” the group said in a statement obtained by the Varsitarian.

Toledo’s family, friends, and batchmates at the UST College of Rehabilitation Sciences (CRS) were invited to the filing at Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City.

The congressional inquiry comes amid calls for accountability and reevaluation of UST’s academic policies following the death of Toledo, who jumped to his death after learning he had failed the same subject for the second time and missing the passing mark by just 1.5%.

Toledo was initially set to graduate in 2024. After retaking the course Clinical Correlation and Team Approach in Academic Year 2024-2025, his family had expected him to be among the candidates for graduation this June, the Varsitarian has learned.

UST and CRS administrators met with the Toledo family for the first time since the incident on May 30, Olive Toledo, Junver’s sister, confirmed to the Varsitarian.

The closed-door meeting at the Rector’s Hall of the Main Building coincided with the day UST was supposed to send off the more than 7,000 graduating students from the Class of 2025 during the Baccalaureate celebration.

Toledo was laid to rest on May 26 at Heritage Memorial Park in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya.
