PEEVA Restaurant, a major UST food concessionaire and caterer, expects to completely phase out single-use plastics by the end of September in compliance with the University’s newly implemented ban.

A Peeva representative said all of food outlets inside UST had stopped using single-use plastics, with remaining stocks of plastic food containers being used only for delivery orders.

“Regarding this, yes, Peeva is already complying. All of our stores inside the University have stopped using single-use plastics, except for existing purchase orders for deliveries to various departments,” the Peeva representative told the Varsitarian in Filipino.

“Inuubos lang po namin ‘yung natitira na plastic food container pero pag naubos po ito, totally no single-use plastic na po ang Peeva. Possible before end of September ubos na po ito.”

(We are just using up our remaining plastic food containers, but once these are exhausted, Peeva will no longer use any single-use plastics. We expect to use them up before the end of September.)

UST began phasing in its ban on the use and distribution of single-use plastics across the campus in September.

The policy prohibits plastic cups, straws, stirrers, utensils, plates, food containers, sachets, bags, packaging and similar disposable plastic products.

Pilot implementation covers campus concessionaires, along with select academic units and colleges that had adopted similar restrictions.

The Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy has implemented a single-use plastic ban since 2024, while the Junior High School has had one since 2019.

The University-wide policy covers UST operations, special events and activities organized by academic and administrative units, student organizations, suppliers and service providers.

The ban was recommended by the Sustainability Program Overseeing Committee, led by Vice Rector for Research and Innovation Fr. Jannel Abogado, O.P. and Accountancy Dean Fermin Yabut.

UST improved to the 401-600 bracket in the 2026 Times Higher Education University Sustainability Impact Ratings after placing in the 601-800 bracket in the previous five years.
