The first Southeast Asian Congress of Hispanists will be held on March 26 to 27 at the Instituto Cervantes Headquarters in Casa Azul, Intramuros, Manila.
The conference is billed as Literatura Hispano-Filipina entre 1880 y 1920, which translates to Hispanic-Filipino Literature between 1880 and 1920.
It will gather scholars, researchers, and practitioners from across Southeast Asia to foster dialogue on the role of Hispanic studies in a global and multicultural context.
The meeting of specialists will analyze the literary production in Spanish during the period of cultural transition between the decline of the Spanish empire and the consolidation of American rule.
Featuring a range of programs, lectures, and panel discussions, the congress will explore literary traditions and the evolving presence of Spanish in Asia.
A roundtable featuring local and international experts will also be held, during which the state of Hispanic Studies in Southeast Asia will be discussed.
The congress will encourage interdisciplinary approaches to the study of the Spanish-speaking world by strengthening academic networks and promoting collaborative research.
UST journalism faculty member Joselito Zulueta, publications adviser of the Varsitarian, will deliver a lecture on Hispanic-Philippine modernism.
Spanish Ambassador Miguel Utray will give the welcome remarks.
The landmark event is organized by the Embassy of Spain, the Philippine Academy of Spanish Language, and the Dukes of Soria Foundation. John Kobe S. Balod
