JEFFREY JETURIAN’S drama “UnMarry” presents the realities of dissolving a marriage in a conservative society.

The film follows Celine Santos (Angelica Panganiban) and Ivan Buencamino (Zanjoe Marudo), who repeatedly cross paths in the office of lawyer Jacqueline Lombridas (Eugene Domingo).

Celine is determined to defend her rights as the rightful CEO of her bakeshop, which she co-owns with her husband, Stephen Alcaraz (Tom Rodriguez).

Ivan, meanwhile, is a painter-turned-comic book illustrator who struggles with alcoholism in an effort to keep his family together.

As they proceed with the annulment of their respective marriages, Celine and Ivan find comfort in each other’s presence, becoming each other’s stronghold amid the frustrations and anxieties of the legal process.

The film challenges the intrinsic Filipino value of family-centeredness, raising the question of whether it remains worth fighting for when the household no longer serves as a safe space for its members.

Celine emerges as a prime example of resistance to such conventions, as shown by her ability to stand her ground in reclaiming both her financial and bodily autonomy. In contrast, Ivan remains firm in his optimism and belief that he can still have a second chance at a happy family, despite his past actions.

“UnMarry” does not shy away from portraying husbands in a negative light, underscoring the maltreatment that Filipino families, particularly wives and children, often face under a patriarchal society.

Stephen is depicted as controlling and verbally abusive toward Celine, while Ivan is portrayed as neglectful of his son during his years as a raging alcoholic.

The film also highlights the role of children in separated families, validating their struggles in regulating emotions and emphasizing the need for parental guidance amid such stressful situations.

The film won Best Screenplay, Best Director for Jeffrey Jeturian, Best Supporting Actor for Tom Rodriguez, Breakthrough Performer for Zack Sibug, Best Editing, and Best Festival Float. Charlize Ann D. Lavastida
