A CONSERVATORY of Music alumna is set to join the United Kingdom tour production of the hit musical Miss Saigon in July.
Music theatre graduate Aynrand Ferrer was cast as the second understudy for the main character, Kim, and as part of the overall ensemble.
London-based Ferrer trained at the West End and became part of the ensemble of the comic opera “The Pirates of Penzance.”
Ferrer auditioned for the Miss Saigon Broadway production in 2015 but failed to get the role. She made the cut on her second attempt with the UK tour production.
The professional theater neophyte said she waw “overwhelmed and extremely grateful” for the opportunity.
“It was nerve-wracking and tedious. I remember singing the song ‘I’d Give My Life For You’ five times because [the casting directors] were finding a specific emotion [for the character] to portray on certain lines,” Ferrer told the Varsitarian in an email.
The cast will begin rehearsing in May. The Miss Saigon UK Tour will begin at Leicester, England on July 3.
Miss Saigon, a musical by composer Claude-Michel Schronberg and librettist Alain Boublil that catapulted Filipino artists like Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson to global fame, is about a tragic romance set in the middle of the Vietnam War.
Contrary to popular belief, Miss Saigon did not win a Tony for Best Musical. However, Lea Salonga and Jonathan Pryce won Tonys for their roles as Kim and The Engineer, respectively.
