FORTUNATO “Fort” Florencio Garcia, a College of Science alumnus who served as a support staff of the Faculty of Arts and Letters (Artlets), died on Aug. 25. He was 28.

Prior to his death, Garcia was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer of the blood, and was undergoing chemotherapy, blood transfusion, and dialysis, among other medical procedures.

Artlets announced his death on its Facebook page.

Garcia was born on Jan. 14, 1996, to Prof. Maria Cobar-Garcia and Prof. Moises Garcia of the College of Science.

He obtained his undergraduate degree in microbiology from UST in 2018.

Garcia joined the Artlets support staff in 2022, assigned to the communication and journalism programs at the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building (BGPOP).

Asst. Prof. Jose Salandanan, former chair of the now-defunct Department of Communication and Media Studies, recalled Garcia’s work ethic.

“He is a softspoken person and does his stuff quietly,” he said. “He [may be] softspoken, but he gets things rightly done.”

Rodablas Nicolas, a computer laboratory technician who worked with Garcia at the BGPOP, remembered him as a kind person who always extended respect to everyone.

“‘Yong respeto niya sa tao, matanda or bata, makikita mo,” Nicolas said. “It reflects his upbringing.”

Garcia’s wake will be held until Aug. 31 at the St. Peter Memorial Chapels on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. Sydney Venice V. Berba with reports from Fernando Pierre Marcel B. de la Cruz
