Prof. Alejandro Bernardo

A FACULTY of Arts and Letters (Artlets) professor is set to be conferred the Br. Andrew Gonzalez, F.S.C. Distinguished Professorial Chair in Linguistics and Language Education. 

Prof. Alejandro Bernardo was named the 2025 professorial chair holder on Oct. 12 by the Linguistic Society of the Philippines and De La Salle University’s (DLSU) Department of English and Applied Linguistics. 

He is set to deliver his lecture titled “Teaching, Teaching about, and Teaching in World Englishes: Twenty-First Century Perspectives for Diversity, Inclusivity, and Sustainability” on Feb. 22, 2025 at DLSU’s Natividad Fajardo Auditorium. 

Bernardo’s lecture will focus on strategies to enhance English language teaching, grounded in the World Englishes paradigm and aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

A former Artlets assistant dean, Bernardo served as president of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines from 2018 to 2021. He was also the society’s vice president in 2017 and conference director in 2016. 

In 2022, he was appointed vice chairperson of the Philippine Social Science Council. 

Bernardo is the associate editor of the Asian Journal of English Language Studies, the official journal of the UST Department of English. He was its editor in chief from 2021 to 2022. 

He earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education, major in general science, in 2001 and master’s degree in education, major in English, in 2005, both from La Consolacion University in Bulacan. 

In 2013, Bernardo completed his doctorate in English language studies at the UST Graduate School, where he later served as faculty secretary from 2013 to 2019.

He is also a researcher at the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education.
