THE ASSISTANT dean of the UST-Alfredo M. Velayo (AMV) College of Accountancy has been feted the 2024 Outstanding Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Education by the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA).
Asst. Prof. Francisco Caliwan Jr. was recognized for his contributions to Philippine accounting education, including advocating for improving the quality of life of Filipino accounting teachers through the proposed Magna Carta for Accounting Teachers.
Caliwan said the recognition was a “dream of many accounting teachers.”
“The thought of receiving this recognition is very fulfilling. The award recognizes accounting teachers with outstanding achievement and distinguished performance as an educator, and whose outstanding contribution has a national impact,” he told the Varsitarian.
Caliwan obtained his accountancy degree from the Technological Institute of the Philippines Manila in 2010.
He completed his master’s in business administration at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila in 2015, and his master of science in professional accounting in 2018 at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, US.
Caliwan joined AMV in 2013, primarily teaching intermediate accounting and integrated review courses. He was chair of the accountancy program and faculty secretary before becoming assistant dean in 2022.
Outside UST, Caliwan served as the president of the National Association of CPAs in Education (NACPAE) from 2023 to 2024, during which he led nationwide workshops on outcomes-based education and updates on the CPA licensure exams.
Caliwan also serves as co-chair of PICPA Academy.
In 2018, Caliwan was honored by the PICPA with the Young Achiever in Education award for his commitment to UST as the faculty secretary and program chair of BS Accountancy.
He was also recognized for launching the UST Continuing Professional Development Provider Center for Accountancy.
The Outstanding Certified Public Accountant in Education is a recognition the PICPA gives annually “to honor exceptional contributions in accounting education.”
