THE DEAN of the College of Education was conferred the “Catholic School Heroes Award” by the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) on Nov. 15 in Davao City. 

Assoc. Prof. Pilar Romero received the award during the 2024 CEAP National Convention in recognition of her contributions to Catholic education and for upholding the values of CEAP. 

“Dr. Romero’s advocacy for Catholic education is seen in her numerous involvements in the fields of instruction, research, and extension projects that aim to contribute to the flourishing of Catholic education in the country,” the CEAP said. 

“Her latest research on Catholic education leadership is a pioneering work that seeks to provide the Church in the Philippines and Catholic educational institutions a framework for the sustained and systematic training and formation of their leaders,” it added. 

Romero is the inaugural principal of the UST Senior High School, serving in the post from 2015 to 2018 before taking the helm of the College of Education. 

She is a former assistant dean of the College of Education and a supervising teacher of religious education majors at the Education High School. 

In 2018, she received the 18th Dangal ng UST Gawad Benavides Award for her 35 years of service to UST, and the Distinguished Thomasian Alumni Award in 2022. 

Romero obtained her education degree major in school guidance and character education, master’s degree in higher religious studies, and doctorate degree in philosophy major in theology at UST. 

She obtained her doctorate degree in education major in religious education and values education from De La Salle University. 

Romero is a technical consultant for Philippine Catholic school standards for higher education and an external expert for the Development Academic of the Philippines.

CEAP and partners Diwa Learning Systems Inc. and Bato Balani Foundation Inc. began conferring the Catholic School Heroes Award in 2020 to educators who embody service and excellence in Catholic education.
