THE UNIVERSITY is set to host the Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines (JSAP) National Conference 2024 on Nov. 29 at the Albertus Magnus Auditorium, where educators will discuss pressing challenges facing journalism education and practice.
The conference will tackle the impact of global conflicts — such as the Russia-Ukraine war, tensions in the West Philippine Sea, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza — on journalism.
With the theme, “Journalism Education Amid Geopolitical and Technological Upheavals,” the conference will also tackle the repercussions technological advancements have on news reporting.
Polish academic Krystian Cholaszczynski will deliver a lecture on geopolitics and journalism. Assoc. Prof. Sara Chinnasamy, a Malaysian political and social media analyst, will discuss the intersections of artificial intelligence and journalism.
Assoc. Prof. Jeremaiah Opiniano, director of the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education, will present a critical overview of journalism research in the Philippines in his lecture titled “A Global Research Agenda for PH Journalism Education.”
JSAP President Lucia Palpal-latoc Tangi from the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and Asst. Prof. Felipe Salvosa II, UST Department of Journalism chair and Varsitarian assistant publications adviser, will also speak at the event.
The conference will feature a special session with panelists Jose Torres Jr., executive director of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security; Fernando Garcia Sepe Jr., former deputy editor for multimedia at ABS-CBN News; and photojournalist Jimmy Domingo, a lecturer at UP Diliman and De La Salle University.
JSAP is a professional organization representing journalism educators from private and public institutions. It was established to promote the study and research of journalism while advocating for independent and free news media.
