STUDENTS from the UST Faculty of Civil Law who made it to the dean’s list in Term 2 of Academic Year 2023-2024 received a total of P1.4 million in cash incentives for their “diligence and hard work in the study of law.”

The incentive was distributed among 132 students, according to the faculty’s Facebook post on Feb. 10.

An average of at least 86 is needed to qualify for the dean’s list at the Faculty of Civil Law.

“Your hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. Honored by none other than Dean Nilo Divina, your achievement is an inspiration to the Thomasian academic community,” the post read.

Divina told the Varsitarian that he started giving incentives to dean’s listers when he assumed the deanship of the Faculty of Civil Law in 2010.

“This initiative was introduced as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, discipline, and perseverance among our students,” said Divina.

“By providing financial incentives, we aim to alleviate some of the burdens that come with legal education and inspire our students to strive for continued excellence,” he added.

UST’s law school placed fourth among top-performing institutions in the 2024 Bar examinations, recording an 80.35% passing rate with 139 passers out of 173 examinees.

Bar topnotchers from the Faculty of Civil Law have received generous incentives.

In 2023, passers of the licensure exam were treated to an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan.

The cycle’s topnotcher, Ephraim Bie, received almost P2 million as a reward: P1.25 million from DivinaLaw Foundation, P500,000 from Thomasian lawyer Rey Oben, and P200,000 from the UST Law Alumni Foundation, Inc.

Divina is the managing partner of DivinaLaw, the law firm that he founded in 2006. with reports from Janica Kate J. Buan
