THE FORMER dean of the Conservatory of Music has been appointed to the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHEd) expert body for music.

Assoc. Prof. Antonio Africa, who concluded his eight-year tenure as dean of the UST Conservatory this year, will serve a four-year term as member of the CHEd technical panel for music until 2028.

In a Facebook post, Africa said he was “excited to contribute to the program’s roadmap, responsive and relevant to the needs of the institutions I will be working with, all the other music institutions, and my beloved alma mater, UST Conservatory of Music.”

This is the third time for Africa to join the CHEd panel following one-year stints in 2016 and 2017.

Africa took the helm of the UST Conservatory in 2017, before being succeeded in January by Prof. Maria Alexandra Chua, the former director of the UST Research Center for Culture, Arts, and Humanities.

Africa obtained his bachelor’s degree in composition from UST in 1986 and completed his master’s in music in 2007.

He earned his master’s in ethnomusicology at Philippine Women’s University in 2011 and his doctorate in music in 2015.

Technical panel chairpersons and members guide the CHEd in crafting policies for higher education programs. They also develop guidelines and criteria for identifying centers of development and excellence.

The UST Conservatory is a CHEd center of excellence.
