DESPITE media trends shifting away from traditional formats, radio remains a thriving medium for information and connection in UST through Tiger Radio, the University’s official online radio broadcasting arm.
On Feb. 13, Tiger Radio celebrated Valentine’s Day and World Radio Day with a caravan at the UST Grandstand, featuring student jocks, guests, and concessionaires.
Project head Asha Medalla emphasized the station’s mission to sustain radio’s relevance amid the popularity of digital platforms.
“Right now, it’s [common] to not have ever listened to the radio unless you’re in the car. But for a lot of places in the Philippines, the radio is still the most used gadget because for them, that’s their only source of news,” she said.
“We try to promote radio in any way possible to make it known to people that it still exists and that it’s still very much alive.”
In fact, social media and other online platforms boost UST’s radio channels, contrary to the belief that digital media is replacing traditional formats.
“We leverage social media and online platforms to tell the Thomasian story in new and exciting ways to ensure that UST, TigerTV and Tiger Radio remain relevant to younger audiences,” said Asst. Prof. Faye Abugan, TMN adviser, in an earlier interview with the Varsitarian.
“TMN [continues] to inspire and develop the next generation of Thomasian volunteers by expanding our training programs and workshops, strengthening our mentor culture, provide them with the ‘intangibles.’”
In its World Radio Day event, Tiger Radio took a page from Papa Dudut, a popular Filipino radio announcer known for reading letters from listeners about their love experiences in his show at Barangay LS 97.1 FM.
UST student jocks Alexandria Carlos, Liam Recacho, and Dennise Balacanao hosted the event, which included one-on-one conversations, “confessions,” and stories from Thomasians.
Special guests Nikka Singh and Jedrick Conoza from Artistang Artlets participated in an interactive discussion on love. Guest jock Tina Ryan from Magic 89.9 also joined the event.
Tiger Radio’s caravan featured performances by Thomasian artists Allirosh and SEFY.
Tiger Radio previously marked World College Radio Day on Nov. 8 at the UST Quadricentennial Park with student jocks from various colleges such as Mapúa University, University of the Philippines, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines. with reports from Rev E. Dela Cruz
