VETERAN journalist and columnist Jullie Yap-Daza is set to deliver the keynote address at the Faculty of Arts and Letters’ (Artlets) 60th anniversary gala on March 1 at the Manila Hotel.
Daza, who writes the column “Medium Rare” for Manila Bulletin, where she served as associate editor, earned her Litt. B degree in journalism from the now-defunct UST Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (Philets) in 1961.
At the time, Philets had yet to merge with the Bachelor of Arts programs in the also-defunct College of Liberal Arts. The merger in 1964 gave birth to Artlets, which carries with it Philets’ identity as the oldest liberal arts college in the country.
During her time at UST, Daza also served as the first female assistant editor of the Varsitarian.
Daza began her professional journalism career at 18 for the now-defunct Evening News, writing under the column “Teen trends and trifles.” She also edited the paper’s fortnightly men’s magazine.
When she transitioned to the Daily Mirror, Daza began her popular column, “Medium Rare.”
Daza hosted late-night television programs “Tell the People” on RPN-9 and “Jullie” on ABS-CBN. She also served as editor in chief of Lifestyle Asia, a magazine that circulates in other Asian countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore.
A bestselling author, Daza published several books, including “Etiquette for Mistresses,” “Manners for Moving Up,” “A Time to Love, a Time to Leave,” “The Best of Medium Rare,” “The Love Stories of Jullie Y. Daza,” and “I Didn’t Marry You Because I Love You.”
In 2014, she received The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Award (Total), the highest honor conferred by UST upon its graduates who have made significant contributions to society and the Church.
The same year, UST also conferred the Total distinction to the Blanco brothers Noel, Michael, and Glenn, Artlets graduates who were commissioned to create a mural depicting the faculty’s history for its 60th anniversary.
