POPE LEO XIV appointed a UST alumnus as the first bishop of a newly established diocese in Bangladesh on Wednesday, March 25.
Bishop-elect Msgr. Paul Gomes will lead the over 24,400 Catholics at the Diocese of Joypurhat, in the northern part of Bangladesh.
Born on Sept. 3, 1962, in Kharbaria, Bangladesh, the bishop-elect obtained a master’s degree and licentiate in dogmatic theology from the University in 2000.
In 2002, he became a professor of dogmatic theology and, from 2009 to 2010, vice rector of the Holy Spirit Major Seminary in Banani, Dhaka, where he studied philosophy and theology.
Gomes later became the rector of Holy Spirit Major Seminary.
Gomes served as parish priest of the Good Shepherd Cathedral of Rajshahi diocese.
He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rajshahi on Dec. 29, 1992.
As a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Dhaka, the Joypurhat see, composed of 11 parishes, was formed after the pope merged the territories of the Diocese of Rajshahi and the Diocese of Dinajpur. Yuvshenka Andrea R. Osea
