PROF. REY Rey Donne Papa, the UST College of Science dean, has been elected president of the Philippine Society for Freshwater Science.

Papa will serve a three-year term from 2024 to 2026, following his previous role as vice president of the society since 2018.

A staunch advocate for conserving freshwater ecosystems such as Taal Lake, Papa specializes in studying inland water ecosystems. He earned his bachelor’s in biology in 2002.

As dean, Papa established the UST Zooplankton, Ecology, Systematics, and Limnology research group under the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

In 2022, he was elected chairperson of the research council of the Protected Area Management Board for Taal Volcano Protected Landscape.

The Philippine Society for Freshwater Science, an organization dedicated to promoting the development of freshwater research and its continuous development, announced Papa’s election during the 4th Philippine Symposium on Freshwater Biodiversity and Ecosystems held at the Silliman University in Dumaguete from Nov. 13 to 16.

This year’s symposium highlighted conservation strategies, water security challenges, and sustainable management of inland waters.

The Philippine Society for Freshwater traces its origins to the inaugural edition of the symposium in 2016, which was held at UST and chaired by Papa.
