In his third State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. sent his greetings of luck to 28 Filipino athletes representing the Philippines in summer games in Paris, France.
“To the 28 of our finest athletes who are competing in Paris now for the glory of the Philippines, let us wish them well and the best good luck,” Marcos Jr. said.
While there are indeed 28 athletes from the Philippines set to compete in Paris, this number includes participants in both the Olympics and the Paralympics, which are distinct international multisport events.
The Olympics will feature 22 Filipino athletes: Thomasian pole vault star EJ Obiena, Carlos Yulo, Aleah Finnegan, Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio, Aira Villegas, John Ceniza, Elreen Ando, Vanessa Sarno, Levi Jung-Ruivivar, Joanie Delgaco, Samantha Catantan, Emma Malabuyo, Carlo Paalam, Hergie Bacyadan, Bianca Pagdanganan, Dottie Ardina, Kiyomi Watanabe, Lauren Hoffman, John Tolentino, Kayla Sanchez, and Jarod Hatch.
The Philippines will field six Paralympians: Ernie Gawilan, Angel Otom, Jerrold Mangliwan, Cendy Asusano, Agustina Bantiloc, and Allain Ganapin.
The 2024 Olympic Games will kick off on July 26 and will run until Aug. 11, while the Paralympics will begin on Aug. 28 and end on Sept. 8.
