THE UST women’s team made history with four straight championships while the men’s squad claimed back-to-back titles in the UAAP beach volleyball tournaments at the SM Sands by the Bay Sunday.
Lady Spikers Gen Eslapor and Babylove Barbon displayed resilience in securing a thilling 21-14, 20-22, 15-12 and 27-25, 21-18 win over La Salle tandem Tin Tiamzon and Tine Jazareno.
The Tiger Sands tandem of Jaron Requinton and Rancel Varga dominated the Tamaraw duo of Jude Garcia and Doy Barrica, 21-10, 21-11, and 21-19, 21-15.
Both UST teams went undefeated on their way to the title. Lady Spiker Barbon and Tiger Sand Varga were crowned MVPs.
La Salle forced a decider after a 20-all deadlock with Jazareno’s service ace and Tiamzon’s off-speed attack in the first match.
A 3-0 run from UST capped by Barbon’s looper gave the España-based duo a one-game advantage.
UST finished the next set with Barbon’s cross-court kill after an off-speed shot by Eslapor.
Barbon’s cross-court spike sealed the win for the defending champions.
In men’s play, the Tiger Sands gained a one-game-to-none advantage after Varga’s cut-shot, an error on the Tamaraw’s side and a service ace from Requinton.
Requinton’s cross-court kill in the final set of the second match gave the Tiger Sands’ a second straight title.
