The UST Male Woodpushers pummeled the DLSU Green Woodpushers, 3-1, to open their UAAP Season 88 men’s chess tournament campaign at the Adamson University Gymnasium on Sunday, Sept. 28.

After the opening stage, UST sat at the top of the standings with three game points, tied with the UP Fighting Maroons.

On Board 1, Carl Daluz defeated Angeli Biete, while Chester Reyes needed only 34 moves to overwhelm DLSU’s Gio Ventura on Board 2.

UST’s Lee Roi Palma outmaneuvered Cyril Telesforo’s King’s Indian Defense in 42 moves on Board 3.

Jan Clifford Labog absorbed the Male Woodpushers’ lone defeat, yielding to Rigil Pahamtag’s English Opening in 47 moves on Board 4.

In the boys’ division, the UST Junior Male Woodpushers downed the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 3-1, to gain three points.

The Male Woodpushers will next face the Adamson Soaring Falcons on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m., at the same venue, while the Junior Male Woodpushers will take on the FEU Baby Tamaraws on the same date and venue.
