The UST Male Woodpushers thwarted the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 3.5-0.5, to secure their second win in the UAAP Season 88 men’s chess tournament at the Adamson Gym on Saturday, Oct. 4.

The Male Woodpushers stayed at the top of the standings with four match points and 6.5 game points.

On Board 1, Christian Mark Daluz made his Season 88 debut on a high note, outlasting John Simon’s King’s Indian Defense in 56 moves.

Chester Reyes grabbed his second win of the season on Board 2 after toppling Joshua Roque’s Sicilian Defense in just 42 moves.

Lee Roi Palma needed 50 moves to take down Robert Palisoc on Board 3.

Meanwhile, on Board 4, Mark Reyes made his Season 88 debut but settled for a draw against Adamson’s Dustin Herrero in 42 moves.

In the boys’ division, the UST Junior Male Woodpushers notched their second straight victory of the season after dispatching the FEU Baby Tamaraws, 2.5-1.5.

Gabriel Paradero, who won by default in their campaign opener against Ateneo, settled for a stalemate on Board 1 against Gladimir Romero in only seven moves.

On board 2, UST’s King Lanz Pamplona, using the Sicilian Defense, drew with Joemal Narzabal after 35 moves.

John Borce secured the Junior Male Woodpushers’ lone win in 48 moves after defeating King Beltran’s Slav Defense on board 3.

Jian Carlo also battled to a draw against Lance Orlina in 54 moves.

The Male Woodpushers will try to keep their winning streak alive when they face the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the UP Fighting Maroons on Sunday, Oct. 5, while their high school counterparts will face the DLSZ Junior Woodpushers. The games will be held at the same venue.
