THE UST Lady Woodpushers fended off the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 3.5-0.5, before bowing down to the NU Lady Bulldogs, 2.5-1.5, in the UAAP Season 88 women’s chess tournament at the Adamson Gym on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
After previously leading the standings, the Lady Woodpushers dropped to third with six match points and 12.5 game points, while DLSU is now the frontrunner with nine match points and 14 game points.
In their matchup against Adamson, Precious Yecla’s English Opening led to a draw against Robelle de Jesus after 43 moves in Board 1.
In Board 2, Jamaica Lagrio’s Sicilian Defense needed only 31 moves to take down Christina Samarita.
Josemier Panol notched her second win this season in Board 3 after defeating Angela San Luis in 76 moves.
In Board 4, Rohanisah Buto’s Caro-Kann setup secured her first Season 88 victory after toppling Lira Placer in 57 moves.
Facing the Lady Bulldogs, NU’s Allaney Doroy and Jersey Maticio prevailed over Yecla and Lagrio, respectively.
In Board 3, Panol secured UST’s lone triumph over Lady Bulldogs’ Jelaine Adriano, while in Board 4, Buto split the point with Kyla Dalagan.
In girls’ play, the Junior Lady Woodpushers posted mixed results, sweeping Adamson 4-0, while yielding to the NUNS Bullpups, 3.5-0.5.
UST’s Daren de la Cruz took down Adamson’s Florence Isabedra in 33 moves in Board 1.
In Board 2, Angel Po came out on top, outlasting Antontett Atienza in 53 moves.
Iana Sotaridona and her Queen’s Pawn approach notched her first win in Season 88 against Crystal Sunga in just 27 moves in Board 3.
Mecel Gadut completed the sweep against Elizah Bandejas in Board 4 following 42 moves.
Against the Bullpups, De la Cruz was subdued by Sara Dalagan’s Caro-Kann Defense, which lasted 71 moves in Board 1.
In Board 2, Ryien Bahita outplayed Sotaridona in 59 moves.
In Board 3, Kara Meneses settled for a stalemate with Kayla Aurielo, while Gadut bowed to Yaneah Morada after 78 moves in Board 4.
The Lady Woodpushers will next face the FEU Lady Tamaraws on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the same venue, while their junior counterparts will go against the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
