The UST Male Tennisters handed the UP Fighting Maroons their first loss in the UAAP Season 88 men’s tournament, 4-1, on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Colegio San Agustin-Bulacan Tennis Court.
UST improved to 3-2, while UP dropped to 4-1, tying NU and UE in the standings.
UP’s Loucas Fernandez made quick work of Christopher Sonsona, 6-4, 6-2. UST team captain Sebastian Santos responded by defeating Heinz Carbonilla, 7-6, 6-4.
In the final singles match, UST’s Ericjay Tangub outlasted UP’s Lance Fernandez, 6-7, 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles play, UST’s tandem of Evan Bacalzo and Al Zayeed Baid prevailed in a three-set thriller over UP’s Miguel Igulpas and Raymund Goco, 7-6, 5-4, 10-8.
Richard Bautista and Nash Agustines dispatched UP’s Andrei Jarata and Carl Tan, 6-4, 6-4, to seal the win.
The Male Tennisters will wrap up their Round 1 campaign against the winless Ateneo Blue Eagles on Feb. 28 at the same venue.
