The UST Junior Golden Booters withstood the PAREF Southridge Admirals, 1-0, for their third straight victory in the UAAP Season 88 boys’ football tournament Saturday, March 7, at the UP Diliman Football Pitch.
UST improved to a 6-1-1 win-loss-draw record for 19 points to top the standings, while Southridge slipped to 3-4-3 with 11 points.
“Happy ako sa performance nila, especially binigay nila ‘yong best na ma-redeem ‘yong sarili nila from their 0-1 loss sa first round,” UST assistant coach David Basa told the Varsitarian as the Junior Golden Booters avenged their lone Round 1 loss against Southridge.
“Game by game kailangan naming i-ready ang boys lalo na sa mga susunod lalo na nasa Round 2 na kami; dapat physically and mentally ready sila.”
The Junior Golden Booters scored the lone goal in the 30th minute as Roy Panunciar connected on an assist from Agos Alingalan.
Southridge attempted to equalize minutes later on a Josemaria Fider effort but failed to find the back of the net.
UST’s Joshua Balliner had a chance in the 40th minute, but goalkeeper Reign Deomampo made the save.
The Junior Golden Booters continued to apply pressure with attempts from Alingalan in the second half before holding on to secure the win.
UST will next face the Adamson Soaring Falcons on Wednesday, March 11, at the same venue.
