The UAAP is set to add golf to its sports calendar as a demonstration event in Season 88, league executive director Rebo Saguisag announced Wednesday, Feb. 11.

The golf competition, scheduled for May, will feature at least five schools, including UST, according to Varsitarian sources.

Saguisag said the move was part of the UAAP’s push to branch out into additional sports.

“That’s the goal really of the UAAP, to expand its platform, and to follow the lead of basketball, volleyball, and cheerdance, to have its own press conference one day and the same popularity that volleyball now enjoys,” Saguisag said during the Season 88 volleyball press conference at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The league is eyeing the Luisita Golf and Country Club in Tarlac as the possible venue for the event.

UAAP schools have been sending golf teams to compete in various commercial tournaments, including the ICTSI Intercollegiate Tour.

Last month, the UST golf team sat down with UAAP Season 88 president and Institute of Physical Education and Athletics director Rodel Cansancio O.P. to map out plans for the sport’s UAAP debut.

UST has maintained an active presence in golf, staging the annual Rector’s Cup to generate funds for student-athletes.
