The UST Lady Judokas opened the UAAP Season 87 women’s judo tournament with one gold, one silver, and five bronze medals at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 14.

UST ended Day 1 with 15 points, trailing top seed UE, which earned 22.

Faiza Asilum captured the lone gold for UST after defeating UP’s Anika Caminero in the -52 kilogram finals.

“Overall, this is a very good start for us,” UST head coach Gerard Arce told the Varsitarian. “The girls delivered sa challenge nitong first day ng tournament. But then again, our goal is bringing the championship sa UST as a team.”

UST’s Arielle Alorcan settled for silver after falling to UE’s Leah Jhane Lopez in the -48 kilogram finals.

Lady Judokas Christine Quiniones and Mary Joy Baldos earned bronze medals in the -44 kilogram division.

UST’s Angelique Cortez also secured a bronze in the -52 kilogram category, while Princess Cortez claimed the final bronze medal for UST in the -57 kilogram division.

“Maganda na seven out of eight players nakakuha ng medal pero hindi pa ‘to yung goal so wala pa tayong dapat i-celebrate,” Arce said.

Day 2 of the tournament will take place on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the same venue.
