UST Tiger Judoka Chino Sy captured the gold medal in the men’s -100 kg division at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games on Friday, Dec. 12, at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi in Pathum Thani, Thailand.
Sy, the UAAP Season 85 MVP, went 3-0 in the individual event, capping his run by defeating Indonesia’s Gede Ganding Kalbu Soethama via ippon to claim the title.
The 24-year-old opened his campaign by outlasting Khamxay Vongphachanh of Laos. Sy then overwhelmed home bet Kittipong Hantratin of Thailand in just 13 seconds via seoi nage to advance to the final.
The victory marked Sy’s second SEA Games gold medal after also winning the men’s -82 kg sport sambo during his debut at the 2019 Manila Games.
“This is my first time competing in the SEA Games for Judo,” Sy told the Varsitarian. “Pangarap ko talagang makapag-laro sa sport na to and to represent the country. With my experience from my previous sport, nag-bunga rin talaga and na maintain ko ‘yong composure ko.”
Sy will next compete in the mixed team event on Sunday, Dec. 14.
