The UST Tiger Judokas secured three gold medals in the Navotas City Day Invitational Judo Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 11.

The men’s team also copped five silvers and three bronzes, while the Lady Judokas bagged three silvers and one bronze in the tournament, which featured other university squads.

“They played superb considering others tried to compete in their unnatural weight divisions,” Tiger Judokas head coach Kidao Esteban told the Varsitarian.

Juan Evangelista ruled the -66 kilogram division, while Justin Bagallon (-60 kg) and Randy Ferrera (-73 kg) rounded out the gold medalists for UST.

Jammil Lorenzo settled for silver after losing to Evangelista in the final. Rodge Bernal (-90 kg) and Benedict Plata (+100 kg) also secured silver.

Albrene Borja took silver in the -55 kilogram division, while Arzel Lugana did the same in the -60 kilogram category.

Kyan Ballecer scored a bronze in the -100 kg division, while Mark Quirimit and Gabriel Banta snatched bronze in the -55 kilogram and -60 kilogram categories, respectively.

On the distaff side, Sophie Madamba (+78 kg), Mariel Membrillos (-70 kg) and AJ Gangan (-63 kg) took silver medals in their categories.

Marvie Cañete added a bronze in the -57 kilogram division for UST.

“Kakabalik lang namin lahat sa training after ng bakasyon, so ‘yong tournament nag-serve lang to see our flaws and mistakes right and see how we can develop in the coming months,” Lady Judokas head coach Gerard Arce told the Varsitarian

The UAAP judo tournaments will be held in April.
