The UST Tiger Judokas collected two gold medals, four silvers, and one bronze to open the UAAP Season 88 men’s judo tournament at Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, April 11.

UST topped the standings with 27 points, with De La Salle University (DLSU) trailing with 10.

“Today was exemplary because we got two golds for the event, so it was a great start for the team,” UST head coach Kidao Esteban told the Varsitarian.

Chino Sy won gold in the -100 kg division after defeating teammate Jeordan Caguicla in just eight seconds, while Caguicla finished with silver.

Kyan Ballecer ruled the -90 kg division, overcoming fellow Tiger Judoka Dwyne Peregrino via ippon, while Peregrino settled for silver.

Tristan Reyes earned silver in the +100 kg division after falling to DLSU’s George Baclagan.

John Carlos Aniciete also secured silver in the -81 kg category after losing to Ateneo’s Aldwyn Thor.

Benedict Plata bowed to Alec De Guzman of DLSU in the +100 kg division, claiming the lone bronze medal.

In the juniors’ division, the UST Junior Tiger Judokas held a 20-14 advantage over defending champion University of the East.

Zachary Cabrera took down the reigning MVP in the semifinals of the -66 kg category before winning the gold medal match.

Julian Valien De Castro also won gold in the -73 kg final against Amare Vicente.

“Sana ma-maintain ‘yong momentum, kahit dalawa lang mag-gold then may possibility na ma-retain natin ‘yong championship,” Esteban said.

The second and final day of the tournament will be held Sunday, April 12, at the same venue.
