THOMASIAN alumnus and 2019 Southeast Asian Games medalist Rodolfo Reyes Jr. bagged the gold medal in the 2020 Lents Taekwondo Worldwide Online Poomsae Open last Sept. 20.

The former UST Poomsae team captain secured the lone gold for the Philippines with an average of 7.35 points in the under-30 senior male category.

In an online interview, Reyes said that he was still adjusting to online competitions amid the pandemic.

“I’m used to seeing judges in front of me to guide and rate my performance but in the ‘new normal’ … cameras serve as our judges,” he told the Varsitarian.

Reyes performed two forms for the finals and scored 7.34 on his Pyongwon and 7.36 on his Koryo.

Korea’s Choo Rok Oh won silver with an average of 7.235 points while Taiwan’s Chiou Mu En settled for bronze with 7.185 points.

The Philippines won two bronze medals courtesy of Patrick King Perez and the pairing of Ernesto Guzman Jr. and Zyka Angelica Santigo.

Guzman also took home a silver medal in the over-30 senior male division with 7.13 points.

UST Lady Jin Stella Yape landed in fifth place with a 6.915-point average in the junior female category.
