Thomasian pole vaulter EJ Obiena secured his first outdoor gold medal of the year after winning the Czesław Cybulski Memorial on Monday, June 29, in Poznań, Poland.
Obiena cleared 5.72 meters to top the field, finishing ahead of Great Britain’s Owen Heard and Italy’s Matteo Oliveri, who both cleared 5.60 meters.
Obiena bounced back from a last-place finish at the Wanda Diamond League in Doha, Qatar, two weeks earlier.
He previously opened his outdoor campaign with a silver medal at the Flight Circus Düsseldorf in Germany after clearing 5.74 meters.
The Filipino Olympian has continued his strong 2026 campaign, collecting multiple podium finishes during the indoor season.
He won gold at the International Springer-Meeting in Cottbus, shared the top spot with Dutch vaulter Menno Vloon, and later captured the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships title in Tianjin, China.
Obiena also topped the ISTAF Indoor Berlin meet with a season-best clearance of 5.78 meters before transitioning to the outdoor circuit.
