UST POOMSAE jins representing the Philippines bagged three golds and two silvers in the first day of the SEA Games taekwondo tournaments at the Rizal Memorial Stadium Saturday.

UST Jins Jocel Ninobla, Aidaine Laxa, Darius Venerable, and alumnus Rodolfo Reyes Jr., took home a total of five medals in eight categories of the poomsae event.

Reyes, a former UAAP MVP, scored an average of 8.349 in the individual male category. He got 8.333 in his koryo and 8.366 in his pyongwon performances, to overtake Thailand’s 8.199 average and bag gold.
Reyes teamed up with brothers Rico and Dustin Mela in the men’s team category to take back-to-back gold medals, scoring an 8.483 average that beat Thailand’s 8.466.
“We felt confident, not only because we are the hosting country, but also because we know that we will not be the only ones to fight. We have the support of our taekwondo families and all Filipinos. It helped boost our confidence in representing our country and showing Filipinos and other countries how hard we trained and worked for this,” Reyes told the Varsitarian in an online interview.
Lady Jin Ninobla’s 8.533 and 8.333 in her taeguk six and keumgang forms averaged an 8.533 score that gave her a 0.001 advantage over Thailand’s 8.532, taking home the gold medal.
Thailand’s gold-medal performance of 8.399 outscored Laxa, Ninobla and Rinna Babanto’s 7.999 average in the women’s team division.
Tiger Jin Venerable notched a silver in the freestyle team division with a score of 6.866, behind Vietnam’s 7.799.
The National Poomsae Team gathered a total of eight SEA Games medals — four golds and four silvers.
SEA Games taekwondo events will resume on Dec. 8 and run until Dec. 9 at the same venue.
