Taekwondo’s Camille Manalo was named the overall Athlete of the Year during closing ceremonies at the Big Dome last March 12. She duplicated the feat by fellow Tiger Jin Marlon Avenido who won the award last year.

Having completed her final playing year, Manalo was also named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in women’s taekwondo after leading the Tigresses to their ninth title this season.

“I’m so proud and amazed that I was able to get the prestigious award. We persevered to get the (championship) title,” she said in Filipino.

Salinggawi honors alma mater in ‘Eterno’

PAYING tribute to its alma mater’s quadricentennial, the Salinggawi Dance Troupe took center stage for its 43rd annual dance concert titled “Eterno: The Legacy Continues” at the Medicine Auditorium last March 11.

“The annual concert was mainly dedicated to UST’s 400th year anniversary and not really for us,” said Jerome San Jose, Salinggawi’s external public relations officer.

In Eterno, a Spanish word for eternity, the group exhibited popular dances in history dating back from the pre-Spanish period.

Salinggawi places fifth in first UAAP streetdance contest

DESPITE exchanging signature stunts and lifts for a much easier popping and locking, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe still failed to groove towards the top in the first ever UAAP Streetdance Competition held simultaneously with this year’s UAAP closing ceremony last March 12 at the Araneta Coliseum.

The dance troupe garnered an overall score of 76.33 percent, placing fifth in the rankings. The La Salle Dance Company – Street was declared the champion, posting a 91 percent score, while the University of the Philippines Streetdance Club and Company of Ateneo Dancers (CAD) grabbed the second and third place with average scores of 88.25 percent and 86.67 percent respectively.
