Golden Tigresses end losing skid

THE UST Golden Tigresses snapped a four-game losing skid with a 25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 25-22 win against the University of the East (UE) at The Arena in San Juan last Jan. 18, but were dominated by the National University four days later.

With the straight-set loss to NU, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23, the Golden Tigresses would have to win all their remaining games in the second round to keep their Final Four hopes alive, said coach Odjie Mamon.

Mamon said his wards became complacent against UST. “I noticed the tendency of the girls to relax in the last, most crucial moments of the game,” he said.

Softbelles scrape past UE, 4-3

THE UST Softbelles won their fifth consecutive game as they escaped the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors, 4-3, in the UAAP softball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium last Jan. 18.

The España-based batters recovered in the last two innings to complete their come-from-behind victory.

Down by two after three innings, UST quickly went to work as Cristy Roa finally scored in the fourth frame after Jonalie Almonia’s right field bat went between the legs of UE’s second baseman.

Mallows Garde then tied the match at two via a Run Batted In (RBI) double.

Golden Sox beat Adamson for first win

THE UST Golden Sox scored five consecutive runs in the crucial stretch to register their first win of the season at the expense of Adamson University, 12-5, in the UAAP baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium last Jan. 19.

The Golden Sox improved to a 1-3 win-loss record after losing their first three games against National University (0-13), De La Salle University (4-14) and Ateneo de Manila University (6-12).

With the game tied at five, UST found its way back at the bottom of the sixth inning after firing five Runs Batted In (RBIs) for a 10-5 advantage.

UST-UP match ends in 1-1 draw

THE UST Golden Booters weathered another late surge to draw against University of the Philippines (UP), 1-1, in the UAAP men’s football tournament at the Far Eastern University-Diliman field last Jan. 19.

The Fighting Maroons unleashed back-to-back attempts in stoppage time to try and take the game after Gabriel Mendoza scored the equalizer in the 69th minute.

UP’s Carlos Monfort was setting up Fe Baya for a goal with a pass from the right wing.

Monfort’s pass put Baya in a one-on-one situation with UST’s goalkeeper but the goalie quickly dove for the ball before Baya could kick it in.

Just a few seconds before the final whistle was blown, Francisco Santos emerged ahead of the pack after a scramble in the midfield.

UST Tennisters dominate foes in UAAP

The UST Female Tennisters defeated University of the Philippines (UP), 4-1, while the Male Tennisters took down rival De La Salle University, 3-2, in the UAAP lawn tennis tournament at the Olivarez Sports Center in Parañaque City last Jan.12.

Leading the game, 2-1, the duo of UAAP Season 74 Rookie of the Year April Santos and Kim Malinis easily snatched the first set of the fourth match, 6-2. But the UST pair struggled on defense in the next frame allowing Lady Maroons Joanna Peña and Monivic Santos to force a deciding set, 2-6.

THE UST Lady Booters missed a game-winning goal in stoppage time and settled for a scoreless draw against perennial nemesis Far Eastern University (FEU) in the UAAP women’s football tournament at the FEU-Diliman field last Jan. 19.

UST almost scored an upset against the Lady Tamaraws, but rookie Daryl Ann Mendoza muffed a soft kick, which hit only the goal’s side bar, from the right flank.

Alina Rose Araneta tried to score late for FEU, but her attempt was deflected by the UST defenders.

The España-based squad remained on top with 11 points via a 3-2-1 win-draw-loss slate, while FEU and Ateneo de Manila University are tied at second place with eight markers apiece.
