Growling Tigers roar in defeat

THE GROWLING Tigers' remarkable run in UAAP Season 76 ended with a 69-71 overtime loss to the De La Salle Green Archers, who claimed the men's basketball title at the Mall of Asia Arena last Oct. 12.

It marked the second straight season wherein the Tigers missed what could have been their first title since 2006. But unlike last year's match against the Ateneo Blue Eagles, this year's series against the Archers had the makings of a classic.

Tigresses end up at third place

THE UST Tigresses ended their UAAP Season 76 women’s basketball campaign with a74-81 overtime loss against De La Salle University in their semifinals game last Sept. 22 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

La Salle, which enjoyed a twice-to-beat advantage at second place, booked the first finals ticket after erasing third-seeded UST’s 15-point halftime lead.

With UST ahead, 66-63, with five seconds left, center Maica Cortez missed both free throws that could have assured the Tigresses of the victory. Lady Archer Camille Claro then sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer that sent the game into overtime.

La Salle carried the momentum until the extra period, sparking a 9-2 run, highlighted by another trey from Claro, for a 75-68 lead at the two-minute mark.

Male, Female Shuttlers fall short

THE UST Male Shuttlers finished third while the Female Shuttlers dropped out of the Final Four in the UAAP badminton tournament at the Jumpsmash Badminton Center in Quezon City.

The Male Shuttlers bowed to defending champions National University (NU), 3-1, in the second round of the stepladder semifinals last Sept. 28 to settle for a bronze medal, a slight improvement from last season’s fourth-place finish.

The Lady Shuttlers had the chance to enter the Final Four in the women’s division, but yielded to De La Salle University University in their final match. The loss put them at fifth place with a 3-4 win-loss record.

Med tech student rules the tracks in Petronas tilt

ALL HE wanted was to drive to release his disappointments in school. That's until he won a race that made him one of the youngest drag racing champions in the country.

Marc Manalo, a fourth-year student from the Faculty of Pharmacy, is currently dominating the Philippine drag racing scene after winning two-consecutive premiere M&H Pro class titles in the 2013 Petronas Philippine Drag Racing Championship Southern Series last June 8.

Only in his rookie year in the professional league, the 20-year-old Medical Technology senior outclassed the veteran racers around the country on his way to winning the national crown.

Male Tigersharks 4th anew, Female Tigersharks ‘boycott’

LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA - The UST Male Tigersharks concluded their Season 76 campaign with another fourth-place finish in the UAAP swimming competitions held at the Trace College Aquatic Center here from Sept. 19 to 22.

The Male Tigersharks, who paraded 14 rookies, registered 175 points after collecting one gold, five silver and two bronze medals in the four-day tournament.

The University of the Philippines (UP) scored 452 points to dethrone Ateneo de Manila University, which crashed to third place with 283 points. De La Salle University placed second with 301 markers.

Power Pinays 12th in Asian Volley

THE NATIONAL women’s volleyball team crashed in the 2013 Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship, finishing 12th over all at Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand last Sept. 13 to 21.

Former UST Lady Spikers Ma. Angeli Tabaquero, the team captain, and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas led the Power Pinays (formerly the Bomberinas), which is composed of 14 collegiate volleyball standouts from different UAAP and NCAA schools.

The Power Pinays, which was in Pool B of the tournament, suffered an early three-game losing skid against India (0-3), Iran (1-3) and China (0-3) in the preliminary round.

The Philippine team, powered by Maizo (22 points) and Tabaquero (19 points), disposed of Sri Lanka for its first win, 3-2.
