Lady Woodpushers snare back-to-back titles

The UST Lady Woodpushers clinched their second consecutive title in the UAAP Season 69 Chess Championship last Sept. 16 at the University of the East (UE) Briefing Room.

UST, with its 31 points, was way ahead of perennial rivals Far Eastern University (FEU) and University of the Philippines (UP). FEU placed second with 25. 5 while UP settled for third with 25 points.

Although UST lost its final match to the Diliman-based chessers, the Lady Woodpushers had already secured the title two rounds earlier with their 5.5 point lead.

Thomasian hailed World Bowling Champ

TOP-RANKED Thomasian bowler Biboy Rivera proved that lightning does not strike the same place twice after knocking all the pins in the World Bowling Championships last Sept. 10 in Busan, South Korea—the same place where he had an Asian Games debacle four years back.

“I really came to the tournament to win,” Rivera, a UST Tourism graduate in 1997, told the Varsitarian. “It was an opportunity to prove my worth so I made the most out of it.”

Salinggawi reigns high for five

WOWING the jam-packed Araneta Coliseum with new acrobatic stunts reportedly derived from the Superman and Spiderman movies, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe achieved the superhuman feat of nailing an unprecedented fifth straight title in the Cheerdance competition of UAAP Season 69 last Sept. 10.

Tigresses reclaim UAAP title

THE LONG wait is over.

A dynamic duo of neophytes helped stir the UST Tigresses toward ending an 11-year title drought as they thrashed the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 67-55, in the winner-take-all Game 3 of the women’s seniors basketball finals last Sept. 28 at the Araneta Coliseum.

From a tight first-half contest, the Tigresses sharpened their claws and dropped a 13-4 bomb with rookie sensation Remia Buenacosa scoring eight points in the third-quarter. The run gave UST a commanding 55-43 lead going to the fourth.

Playing her board

UST LADY Woodpusher Jaclyn Johnson is versatility personified. Her ability to manage her time between playing competitive chess and working as a nurse at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital is a feat not many could accomplish.

Johnson, taking up a masteral course in Nursing Administration at the UST Graduate School, leads contrasting lives on and off the playing arena.

Salinggawi falters in cheering competition

The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, who were bridesmaids for the last two years, came to the Araneta Coliseum last Sept. 22 well-prepared and with one thing in mind –- to capture the Nestle Non-stop UAAP Cheerdancing competition and stop the University of the Philippines from duplicating the feat they carved in the record books four years ago.

But come performance time, UST’s acrobatic choreography was good only for third place as costly errors in execution cost them precious points.

Tigresses come short of Final Four cut, finish fifth

PLAYING the most dominant UAAP women’s basketball squad in recent memory, the UST Lady Tigresses had only two kinds of chances of making it to the final four: slim and none.

Needing a miraculous upset and an unlikely loss by the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws in the last playdate of the tournament, the Tigresses’ fate was not entirely in their hands.

Lady Paddlers still on top spot

With the completion of half of this year’s UAAP Table Tennis hostilities, the UST Paddlers are looking straight and seeing red — that is, a bullseye on their championship target.

The Tiger Paddlers are in second place behind unbeaten University of the Philippines, which is dead-set on exacting revenge on the Tigers who dealt it an unprecedented upset the previous season. The Lady Paddlers, on the other hand, hold the leaderboard in the women’s category after topping their adversaries in round one of competition.

Spikers barge into finals

ARMED with the championship poise and composure that they displayed throughout the tournament, the UST Tiger Spikers brushed away the little resistance given by the Adamson University Falcons en route to a four set demolition, 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 25-20 in the UAAP volleyball final four battle last Sept.30 at the UP-College of Human Kinetics Gym.

The Tiger Spikers were in full force as they catapulted their offensive intensity into the next level with UST men’s volleyball team captain Emilio Reyes leading the charge with his ground-shattering kills and smashes.
