Lady booters third in Chris Monfort Cup

FRESH from their title conquest of the Kick Sand Beach Football Open last April in Subic, the UST Lady Booters shone anew with a second runner-up finish in the Chris Monfort Memorial Cup at the Ateneo de Manila University football grounds last June 9.

Tiger jins fall short in Asian tilt

DESPITE an injury, UST taekwondo coach Dindo Simpao led the Philippine contingent’s campaign with a silver-medal finish in the men’s middleweight division of the Asian Taekwondo Championships last April 22 to 29 in Amman, Jordan.

Simpao suffered a broken forearm after his match against a Syrian opponent, but held on for two more fights before calling it quits midway into his final assignment. Down 3-0, Simpao finally succumbed to the pain.

Tigresses prepare to pounce

WITH THE nucleus of “three-peat” champion De La Salle University Lady Archers gone, the UST Growling Tigresses now have a solid chance of reganing the UAAP women’s basketball title they last won in 1995.

The Taft-based lady dribblers, who carved a perfect 12-0 record last year, has become vulnerable this year with the departure of top scorer Roussel Ocampo. A product of the UST High School, Ocampo led the Lady Archers to the 2001 championship, posting league-best numbers of 19.2 points per game (ppg) and 3.33 steals per game (spg).

From fraternity to glamour league

SCHOOL spirits will peak once again as the country’s premiere collegiate sporting event, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), will kick off its 65th season next month. Throngs of students and die-hard alumni from the eight member-universities will troop to the Araneta Coliseum to witness the colorful opening festivities highlighted by an opening game of the men’s basketball tournament.

After four games, UST tied for third

WHEN the UST Growling Tigers took the court against defending UAAP mens’ basketball champions, De La Salle University, many expected another victory for the Green Archers.

But what nobody had expected last July 27 by both UST and DLSU fans at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum was the tough stand put up by the original “four-peat” champions.

In one of the Archers’ toughest games so far this season, De La Salle staved off a fierce rally by the Tigers to win, 81-76, and remain unbeaten in the UAAP mens’ basketball tournament.

Tiger Cubs’ title retention bid in dire straits

WITH only a win after four games into the elimination round, the Tiger Cubs are sorely missing the services of last year’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Jun Cortez.

The Tiger Cubs are hitting rock bottom as the 20-year old Cortez is already too old to play for the juniors division.

The age limit for the division is 19.

Only a game after grabbing their first win of the season, the Tiger Cubs crashed back to earth again as they were ambushed by the De La Salle-Zobel Bengals in an 82-66 rout at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum last July 27.

UST Tracksters looking sharp

ALTHOUGH the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) track and field season is still months away, the UST Tracksters are already preparing for the big event by participating in tune-up matches and doing heavy recruitment in anticipation of another competitive season in December.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are currently playing in the Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association (PATAFA)-Colgate Weekly Relays held every Saturday at the Rizal Memorial track oval.

UST Woodpushers: poised and checked

WITH barely a week before the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Chess competition, the UST Male Woodpushers are raring to improve on their bridesmaid finish last season.

As part of their rigid off-season training, the Male Woodpushers have played tune-up games against six-time National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) champions, the San Sebastian College (SSC) Woodpushers.

Game of the generals once conquered metro universities

BACK in the 1970s, chess was not the only board game that Thomasians were interested in.

The immense popularity of the Game of the Generals likewise fascinated the Thomasian community.

As proof of this, the first UST Game of the Generals Tournament, which was sponsored by The Varsitarian in cooperation with the UST Coop Restaurant, opened on July 7, 1974.

UST Shuttlecockers shines in JVC National Championships

HOPING to improve on their third-place finish last UAAP season, the UST Male Shuttlecockers showed their fine form during the JVC National Championships last June 6-9 at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati.

After breezing through the eliminations, the tandem of RP Junior Team mainstays Ricky Bartolome and Reynaldo Selga ran out of gas in their championship match against the country’s no. 1 ranked duo of Arolas Amahit and Ian Piencienaves, 9-15, 10-15, to bag second place in the men’s doubles competition.
