University athletes get help

WITH the scientific training they would be undergoing at the Center for Research on Movement Science (CRMS), Thomasian athletes have lesser reasons not to achieve sports excellence.

According to College of Rehabilitation Science (CRS) Dean Dr. Consuelo Suarez, the Center will train the athletes not just physically, but study their physical development as well.

“If you’re not physically fit, you won’t be able to perform. So what we’re doing is we are assessing their physical fitness,” she said.

Judokas gain nat’l slots

IN A BID to gain slots on the national squad, Thomasian Judokas put up a one-gold, three-bronze output at the 49th National Individual Judo Championships last March 29 and 30 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

Led by 2003 University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Rookie of the Year Archie Oliver Martinez, the squad managed to salvage its campaign despite surprising early exits.

The comeback kid

QUIETLY stacking up victories in both local and international competitions, Thomasian jin Tshomlee Go has been making his case as one of the top taekwondo athletes in the country. And with a Busan Asian Games bronze and a World Cup silver under his belt, few people seem to disagree.

At this stage in his young career, Go has often elicited comparisons to Philippine team stalwart and Sydney Olympian Roberto “Kitoy” Cruz. However, Go is quick to say that he would like to make his own mark.

“Iba iyong ginawa niya. Iba iyong gagawin ko,” he said.

The UST Lady Batters made it to the championship game by relying on a grand-slam from up-and-coming sophomore right fielder Gedda Valencia as they creamed a lowly Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 11-0.

Repeat performance!

REELING from a shocking loss to the De La Salle Tennisters, the twice-to-beat University of Santo Tomas Tennisters finally got it done and won their second-straight UAAP title via a 2-1 win last February 9 at the Rizal Tennis Courts in Pasig.

UST Lady Booters meet DLSU in football finals

THE UST Lady Booters continued their amazing season last February 9 as they routed the UP Lady Maroons, 2-0, at the Ateneo Football Field to march into the UAAP Women’s Football finals.

Forward Joyce Landagan put UST into the driver’s seat 17 minutes into the game when she stole the ball midway the field and dribbled towards the goal before drilling it to catch UP’s goal keeper flat-footed.

Fast-rising striker Julie Ann Gerona went for an unguarded goal to bag the game for UST.

UST Lady Batters fail to deny Amazon sweep

Archi tops judo intrams

BACKED by three gold medals in the men’s division, the College of Architecture (CA) judo squad won the overall championship of the 1ST Thomasian Goodwill Games recently at the UST Gymnasium.

The Ateliers won the crown with a 58-point tally, ten points better than eventual second-placer College of Commerce. Commerce actually finished with the same point total as the Faculty of Arts and Letters, but the former was deemed the runner-up due to its greater number of gold medals.

UST Male and Female Shuttlecockers finish third

CONTRASTING fates struck the UST Shuttlecockers as a monumental collapse by the men’s number one singles player dashed the team’s hopes of a higher ranking this season while the Female Shuttlecockers rose above expectations. Both teams finished third in the UAAP Badminton Tournament from January 24 to February 8 at the Rizal Badminton Hall.

Tiger jins champs anew!
