NU overpowers Tigresses, advances to finals

THE UST Golden Tigresses missed the Shakey’s V-League Finals as they fell short against defending champion National University (NU), 21-25, 22-25, 19-25, in Game 2 of their best-of-three semifinals series at The Arena in San Juan last May 13.

The twin towers of former UST high school standouts Dindin and Jaja Santiago led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 points each to book their second consecutive championship appearance.

The Tigresses, who never missed a podium finish since joining the league in 2004, will go for the bronze medal against Adamson University.

In the third set, UST took a 12-9 advantage via a Chlodia Cortez attack, followed by a service ace from team captain Pamela Lastimosa.

Power Pinoys carve up best record in Asian volley cup

THREE former Tiger Spikers reinforced the PLDT Home TVolution-Power Pinoys, who finished seventh in the 2014 Asian Men’s Volleyball Club Championship.

Ian Fernandez, team captain of the Power Pinoys and current assistant coach of the UST Golden Tigresses, along with former Tiger Spikers Jayson Ramos and JP Torres, contributed to the country’s best finish in the Asian circuit since joining the league in 2009.

The Power Pinoys survived Al-Zahra Al-Mina of Lebanon in a five-setter, 25-19, 26-24, 13-25, 21-25, 15-13, last April 16 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Lebanon’s star spiker Bruno Furtado missed the game due to high fever, which the Philippine team took advantage of.

Golden Sox settle for fourth place in 2014 PSC Games

THE UST Golden Sox’ off-season stint was cut short as they bowed down to Ateneo De Manila University, 7-18, to finish fourth in the 2014 Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman’s Baseball Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium last April 13.

Earlier in the eliminations, the Golden Sox notched second spot in bracket B with a 4-2 win-loss slate after defeating Adamson University (5-2), De La Salle University (9-0), Pacific Online (4-3) and Throwbacks (4-1). Their losses came against National University (5-10) and the Philippine Air Force (5-10).

UST lost veterans Amber Plaza, Mario Cerda, Carlo Conge and Jovani Ona to graduation and team captain Arvin Plaza said the PSC tournament served as an adjustment period.

Growling Tigers escape St. Clare in Fr. Martin Cup

AN UNDERMANNED UST Growling Tigers squad displayed menacing defense in the final minute to eke out a 61-58 win over St. Clare College in the Fr. Martin Cup Collegiate Open basketball tournament at the Trinity University of Asia gymnasium last May 1.

With the absence of big men Karim Abdul and Paolo Pe, Ed Daquioag and Kim Lo stepped up and registered two crucial blocks in crunch time to halt St. Clare’s comeback.

Aljon Mariano later dished out an assist that led to a Kent Lao basket with 48 seconds remaining for UST’s second victory under new coach Bong dela Cruz.

St. Clare had chances to tie the game when Jamil Sheriff turned the ball over, but the Tigers played great defense that forced the Saints miss two three-point attempts.

Rivera leads UST to claw Adamson

FORWARD Lore Rivera came up big in crunch time and piloted the UST Tigresses to their second straight victory against Adamson University Lady Falcons, 73-58, in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan last April 25.

Rivera, who only contributed eight points in their season opener against Centro Escolar University (CEU) last April 23, chipped in nine of her 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Tigresses clinched the top spot in group A. She also grabbed eight rebounds.

With the Tigresses leading by as much as 16 points, the Lady Falcons erected a 14-5 run early in the fourth canto to cut the deficit to eight, 49-57, courtesy of JinkyBallasta’s six consecutive points.

UST Stallion FC bow down to Global

THE STALLION Football Club (FC) went scoreless and lost to a much experienced Global FC side, 0-2, in the United Football League U-19 tournament at the Gatorade Chelsea Blue Pitch in Makati last April 27.

Stallion FC, which was reinforced by the UST Golden booters, remained winless in four outings after absorbing three consecutive losses against Agila FC (2-3), Team Socceroo (2-3) and Pachanga Diliman FC (0-1).

Golden Booters head coach Marjo Allado said their exposure in the tournament was more important than winning.

“We still lack a lot of things in the team,” said Allado.“There are times when they don’t understand what they’re supposed to do with their given positions. They still need more games to gain experience.”

La Salle Greenhills drubs Tiger Cubs

THE UST Tiger Cubs fumbled down the stretch and succumbed to De La Salle Greenhills, 61-73, in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the Arena in San Juan last May 4.

With the loss, the Tiger Cubs now hold a 1-2 win-loss card.

UST had the upper hand after three periods, 50-48, before momentum shifted to the Greenies, who exploded with a 13-0 run to lead 63-53.

La Salle also capitalized on the Cubs’ poor freethrow shooting, including five misses from Miguel Jison.

“Basically, kailangan naming mabuo muna. Kailangan maka-shoot kami ng freethrows kasi ang sama ng freethrows namin today,” coach Allan Ascue said.

“The more we are tired, the more we have to be consistent in our freethrows.”

‘Athletic piracy’ mars UST’s bid to regain UAAP overall crown

RECRUITMENT woes and residency issues continue to haunt UST as it failed to regain the UAAP overall championship, which went to De La Salle University for the second straight season.

The Growling Tigers collected a total of 274 points, after getting only two gold medals in women’s taekwondo and poomsae, and a league-high eight silver medals in men’s basketball, beach volleyball, athletics, women’s fencing, men’s taekwondo and women’s football. La Salle finished with 289 points.

Reinforced Tigresses fall short vs NU

DESPITE heavy reinforcement, the UST Golden Tigresses succumbed to defending champion National University (NU), 19-25, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 15-10, in their nail-biting Shakey's V-League match at The Arena in San Juan last Mar. 30.

UST, which acquired former setter Rhea Dimaculangan and reigning UAAP girls’ Most Valuable Player Ennajie Laure as guest players, dropped their season-opener while the Lady Bulldogs improved to a 2-0 win-loss record in Pool B.

Other teams in the same bracket with the Tigresses are Ateneo de Davao University, Far Eastern University and NCAA teams San Sebastian College-Recolletos and University of Perpetual Help System-DALTA.
