Photojournalism as a calling

I NEVER understood the power of a photograph until I became a photojournalist.

I did not know that I could use my camera not only as an instrument to produce art, but as a tool for sparking change.

When I started doing photography, I really did not care much about the people or the places that I captured through my lens.

But as I pursued this passion, I realized that there was more to just capturing a moment through my camera.

Photography, oriented toward journalism, has the bigger and nobler purpose of telling stories and conveying messages behind the images that are captured.

From caring only with aesthetics, I am now more focused on finding the meaning of every event that I go to.

University team clinches fifth spot in Shell Eco Marathon for Asia

THE UST Eco Tigers finished fifth overall in both the urban and prototype categories at the conclusion of the 2016 Shell Eco Marathon-Asia last March 4 at the Quirino Grandstand.

The UST Eco Tigers’ “T400D” and “T400E,” the prototype and urban concept entries of the team, recorded fuel consumption of 69 kilometers per liter (km/L) and 54 km/L respectively.

UST was the only university from the Philippines that made the cut for the alternative fuel urban concept category. The Eco Tigers weren’t given the chance to parade their entry for the urban concept category last year after failing to pass technical inspection.

UST Trackster sets new Philippine record in pole vault

OLYMPIC hopeful Ernest John Obiena once again rewrote the record books by surpassing his own Philippine record in the pole-vaulting event at the recently-concluded Philippine National Games in Pangasinan last March 13.

The electronics engineering major surpassed his record of 5.46 meters set last month by a whisker, clearing 5.47 meters in the annual event. He tried to attempt the hallowed Olympic standard of 5.70 meters, but failed twice.

“My emotions were blank [after the attempt],” he told the Varsitarian. “Maybe [I could have cleared] 5.70 meters but only God would know what I could have done that day. But one thing is for sure. It was not my best result.”

UAAP should check ‘sexist’ coverage of women’s sports

THE University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) board should do something so that the coverage of the women’s volleyball by ABS-CBN as well as that by the general media would focus more on the skills of the players, not their looks and figures. There appears a worrisome tendency by sports commentators and journalists to make “sexist” remarks like “pretty” and “sexy” when making references to the female athletes.

Male Woodpushers end Round 1 at second, Female Woodpushers at fourth

THE UST Woodpushers suffered back-to-back losses at the end of the first round of the UAAP Season 78 chess tournament at the De La Salle University Henry Sy hall last Feb. 25.

The Male and Female Woodpushers faltered against the league-leading National University and University of the Philippines, 1.5-2.5, respectively.

UST’s lone win came from Timothy So Kua, who prevailed over Federation Internationale des Echecs Master Austin Literatus in Board 2.

Woodpushers Normel De Jesus and Christian Flores both yielded to International Master Paulo Bersamino and Vince Medina, respectively, while UST’s Heirry Manaloto settled for a draw against Angelo Mansanero in Board 4.

UST Male Tennisters finish 5th in UAAP tennis tourney

THE UST Male Tennisters ended their forgettable UAAP Season 78 campaign with a narrow 2-3 loss to the University of the East Red Warriors in the lawn tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial tennis courts Feb. 24.

The Male Tennisters slid down to fifth place with a 3-8 win-loss card after a runner-up finish last year.

UST’s Christian Lopez and Francis Lanzado faltered against UE’s Charles Kinaadman and Rodolfo Barquin, respectively.

Rookie Dave Mosqueda sealed UST’s first win after sweeping Jeleardo Amazona, 7-6, 6-4.

The Joel Cabusas-Bernlou Bering pair almost gave the Tennisters a victory but could not overcome Rolly Saga and Rogelio Estano, 5-7, 7-5, 2-6.

New tactician aims to bring back glory days of Lady Booters

LAST season cellar-dwellers, the UST Lady Booters, look to turn things around this year by bringing in a new head coach.

Former UAAP gold medalist Priscilla Rubio, or Coach Aging, will try to steer UST back to football supremacy.

After the team had disbanded en route to the opening of the head coaching position, Rubio was among those who applied for the job left vacant by coach JR Judal.

The Dumaguete native officially assumed the position in the 2015 Philippine Football Federation Women’s Cup where they finished fourth.

“Sa isip ko nandyan na talaga na gusto ko mag-coach, hindi ko lang in-expect na ganoon kabilis,” Rubio told the Varsitarian. “Siguro nakita ‘yung capability ko to lead the team.”
