The UST Female Shuttlers suffered a 3-2 loss to the UP Fighting Maroons to open their UAAP Season 88 women’s tennis campaign on Sunday, Feb. 15, at the Colegio San Agustin Tennis Stadium in Bulacan.
UP’s Paula Uy outlasted last season’s Rookie of the Year Mica Emana, 6-4, 6-2. Jufe Cocoy then made it two straight for the Fighting Maroons by defeating UST rookie Kaye Mustaza, 6-0, 6-1.
Reigning UAAP MVP Kaye Emana responded with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Maria Divinagracia.
The UP tandem of Johea Malazarte and Marielle Jarata thumped Female Tennisters Judy Padilla and Nicolas Dela Rita, 6-3, 7-6, clinching the victory for the Fighting Maroons.
In the second doubles match, UST’s Justine Maneja and Minette Bentillo defeated Glydel Guevarra and Sydney Enriquez, 6-2, 6-4.
The Lady Tennisters will look to secure their first win against the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Feb. 21 at the same venue.
