The UST Male Tennisters fell to the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, 4-1, in the UAAP Season 88 men’s tennis tournament on Wednesday, March 14, at the Colegio San Agustin-Bulacan Tennis Court.
With the loss, UST remained the No. 2 seed with an 8-3 slate, tied with the National University Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, UP secured a twice-to-beat edge in the Final Four after improving to a 10-1 record. Their sole loss came against the Male Tennisters earlier in the first round.
UST’s Ericjay Tangub overcame Fighting Maroon Miguel Iglupas in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, to open the matchup.
UP answered back through Loucas Fernandez’s 6-4, 6-3 rout of Christopher Sonsona, followed by Lance Sebastian’s sweep of UST’s Sebastian Santos, 6-3, 6-1.
In the doubles matches, Al Zayeed Baid and Evan Bacalso put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell to UP’s duo of Raymond Goco and Carl Tan, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Heinz Carbonilla and Andrew Jarata wrapped up the match in three sets against UST’s Richard Bautista and Nash Agustines, 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.
UST will wrap up the eliminations against the University of the East Red Warriors on March 15 at the same venue.
